ADHD – Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD - in Brief
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity that interfere with daily functioning and personal development. Though classically identified in childhood, ADHD often persists into adolescence and adulthood, manifesting in ways that affect academic performance, occupational success, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships.
Far from being a simple behavioural issue, ADHD involves complex alterations in brain structure, function, and neurotransmitter dynamics. A recent epidemiological study showed a global prevalence of 8.0% in children and adolescents – meaning that one in twelve individuals is diagnosed with ADHD.

At JB Private Mental Health, we offer discreet, comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and integrative treatment pathways that address ADHD not just as a disorder, but as a neurobiological condition and significant life challenge requiring nuanced, specific and tailored care. Treatment of ADHD may include pharmacotherapy with stimulant medications (e.g., methylphenidate, amphetamines, lisdexamphetamine) or non-stimulant alternatives (e.g., atomoxetine, guanfacine, bupropion), as well as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support patients in developing strategies for time management, organization, and emotional regulation.
Further components may include Executive Function Coaching (personalized support in establishing routines, task prioritization, and long-term goal setting), nutritional and lifestyle optimization, Mindfulness-Based Interventions (evidence-based approaches such as mindfulness meditation and biofeedback) and Academic or Workplace Advocacy. All interventions and treatment plans should be adapted to the individual needs of each patient.

Types of ADHD
ADHD is diagnostically classified into three primary presentations, based on the predominant symptoms:
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation (ADHD-PI)
This subtype is characterized primarily by distractibility, disorganization, forgetfulness, and sustained attention deficits. It is often underdiagnosed, particularly in females and high-achieving individuals. People with this type of ADHD may have trouble with paying attention or being easily distracted, following instructions or conversations, and may find it hard to stay organized or finish tasks.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation (ADHD-PHI)
This presentation is marked by restlessness, fidgeting, excessive talking, difficulty waiting or sitting still, and impulsive behaviour.
With hyperactivity, people feel a need to always be moving. They have trouble sitting still and may fidget and/or talk too much.
With impulsivity, people have trouble controlling their actions and words. They tend to act on sudden ideas or feelings without thinking about the possible results. They may interrupt others a lot or have trouble waiting their turn.
Combined Presentation (ADHD-C)
The most common form, this type exhibits symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
Each presentation may evolve over time and differ across developmental stages, necessitating regular reassessment and adaptive management strategies.

Typical symptoms of ADHD
ADHD symptoms can vary considerably in intensity and context. In children, symptoms often manifest in academic and social environments. In adults, they may be more evident in executive dysfunction, emotional regulation issues, or career and interpersonal relationship challenges.
Inattention Symptoms:
- Difficulty maintaining focus on tasks or conversations
- Frequently losing items necessary for daily activities
- Struggling with task organization and time management
- Appearing not to listen, even when spoken to directly
- Being easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Symptoms:
- Restlessness or inability to remain seated in appropriate settings
- Talking excessively or interrupting others frequently
- Difficulty engaging in activities quietly
- Acting without forethought or considering consequences
- Impatient behaviour, difficulty waiting in turn-based settings
Many high-functioning individuals with ADHD develop compensatory mechanisms, making symptoms more difficult to detect without a comprehensive, clinician-led evaluation.
Causes & Risk Factors:
The aetiology of ADHD is a multifactorial condition influenced by genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors:
Genetics: ADHD has a high heritability rate, with first-degree relatives significantly more likely to be affected.
Neurochemical Factors: Imbalances in dopamine and norepinephrine transmission, particularly within the prefrontal cortex, are central to the disorder.
Neuroanatomical Findings: Structural and functional variations have been found in brain regions related to attention, impulse control, and executive function – most notably the prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia, and cerebellum.
Prenatal and Perinatal Factors: Exposure to nicotine, alcohol, or high levels of stress during pregnancy, as well as premature birth or low birth weight, can increase risk.
Environmental Factors: Early psychosocial adversity, childhood trauma, and chronic sleep deprivation may exacerbate or unmask symptoms.
At JB private mental health, our biopsychosocial approach ensures that each client’s full context is considered – this is made possible through the deep, ongoing individualized relationship we build with our clients.
Treatment Options
Management of ADHD requires a personalized, evidence-based, and often multi-modal approach. At JB Private Mental Health and with our partners, we offer flexible, precise, and high-level care through the following interventions:

- Pharmacotherapy: Stimulant medications (e.g., methylphenidate, amphetamines, lisdexamphetamine) are considered the most effective first-line treatments, offering significant symptom control when properly dosed and monitored. Non-stimulant alternatives (e.g., atomoxetine, guanfacine, bupropion) may be preferable in cases of comorbid anxiety, depression, substance use, and cardiac concerns, as well as for individuals with a history of addiction.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Particularly effective in adults, CBT can help patients develop strategies for time management, organization, and emotional regulation.
- Executive Function Coaching: Personalized support in establishing routines, task prioritization, and long-term goal setting.
- Nutritional and Lifestyle Optimization: Attention to diet, exercise, and sleep hygiene can substantially improve cognitive performance and symptom management.
- Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Evidence-based approaches such as mindfulness meditation and biofeedback help mitigate impulsivity and enhance attentional control.
- Academic and Workplace Advocacy: Tailored support for educational accommodations or occupational adjustments, often facilitated through neuropsychological evaluation and documentation.
At JB Private Mental Health, each treatment plan is co-created with the client and reflects best medical practice, lifestyle alignment, and the highest standard of confidentiality and care.
